Traditionally associated with the Navajo women, we can trace the origins of this skirt and blouse to the first forced settlement of the Bosque Redondo reservation near Fort Sumner, New Mexico in the 1860s. The government's resettlement program failed there and the Navajo people were allowed to return to their native homes. This pattern includes instructions for authentic broomstick pleating.
