1860’s Civil War Era Mantlelet Pattern
1860’s Civil War Era Mantlelet Pattern

PI 427 - 1860’s Mantlelet Pattern. One size. An option to the cape and Paletote; this mantlelet was popular during the Antebellum and American Civil War era. The silk and lace trimmed Mantlelet is lighter coverage and much dressier. It can also be trimmed iwth long fringe or self ruffle. The armhole is between the capes so the top cape gracefully drapes over the arms. This is an original mantlelet is from a fashion plate in Godey’s ladies magazine. Pictured here are similar Mantlelets found in Godey’s fashion plates from 1852 to 1867. When worn in the 1850s with a waistcoat as shown above, the mantelet made quite a fashionable statement. Later the mantelet became longer in the front fanning well over the domed front sides of crinoline skirts. A mantelet is a shorter coat with cloak or wrap like qualities often emanating from interestingly devised sleeves or illusion of sleeves. Mantelet can also be spelled mantlet.
