This gown was a very popular style in the mid to late 15th century. It is known as the "Burgundian" style, having originated in the Duchy of Burgundy. It spread rapidly through Europe, due to it's flattering line. The shoulders are slope and the neckline is low and triangular, with a wide, contrasting collar. The deep V-front is partially filled with a plastron (neck insert) that buttons into place. The sleeves are tight in fit and may feature a contrast cuff. The skirts are full and, for the higher stations, may have a train. The gown is held in at the waist with a wide belt that either buttons, laces or hooks. The underskirt (not included) may be worn as well.
