Polonaise is a Polish word for a dress with a tight fitting bodice and a short skirt drawn back order a longer skirt. The polonaise was worn fron the 1870s to the 1880s in America, but was actually a revival of a 1700s style from from Europe - also the national costume of Poland. Typically the bodice is very full in the rear and is supported by a bustle, which is included in this pattern. The full sides are called "panniers." The fit of the bodice should be tight and worn over a corset. It is recommended that you tailor it over the corset you will be wearing with the dress. If you prefer not to wear a corset, a "boned" version of the bodice is included to create the same smooth silhouette. Late Victorian.
