1860's Civil War Era Mantel Pattern
PI426 – 1860's Civil War Era Mantel Pattern. One size fits all with adjustments. An option to the cape and Paletote; this mantle may be made lined or unlined, it may be trimmed with ribbon or two edge lace and may be edged with fringe or lace. This mantle is from an 1860 reference and has multiple trim options. The original was made from wool for warmth, but may also be made from silk for a dressier look. Includes some images for trim suggestions. Long coats were impractical with the very full skirts, and the common outer garments were square shawls folded on the diagonal to make a triangle and fitted or unfitted hip-length or knee-length jackets called mantels. “Aniline dyes were discovered in 1856 and quickly became fashionable colors. The first ones were mauve and bright purple. In 1860, two fashionable brilliant pink aniline dyes were named after battles in Italy's fight for independence: magenta, named after the Italian town of Magenta, Italy, and the similar solferino, named after Solferino. Magenta was popularized in England by the Duchess of Sutherland after she was appealed to by the Spitalfields silk weavers.” [ Period Impressions Patterns are created from extant period clothing and are graphically rendered by hand on heavy blue line paper. Skirts from the Civil War and Antebellum periods were typically made of gathered squares of fabric and measurements for skirts may be included instead of unnecessary paper piece in some cases. Period Impression Patterns have detailed instructions, but do assume some sewing experience. Novice sewers may find these patterns a little more challenging. Nice for Antebellum, American Civil War, Western Expansion, Fur Trade Era, Wild West and SASS Living History Impressions.
