PP23 - 1340-1420 Men's Cotehardies and Sideless Surcoats Pattern, contains patterns for 5 cotehardies and three hoods (sizes 36-48). Surcoats and cotehardies for both sexes could be plain and somber, or wildly colorful. Heraldic motifs were common on these garments. Both sexes began wearing houpelandes (PP 26) over a cotehardie after 1380. Cotehardies and surcoats as outerwear became unfashionable before 1425, with one exception. Cotehardies, with or without sideless surcoats, remained fashionable for women, as regal ceremonial garments, until well into the 16th century. When the houpelande went out of fashion, the cotehardie for women briefly re-emerged, with slight changes, as the kirtle (PP51). Men's cotehardies had meanwhile evolved into the doublet (PP43 & PP53). Period Patterns number 23, Men's Cotehardies, c. 1340-1420, contains patterns for 5 cotehardies and three hoods (sizes 36-48). View I - Tight hip-length cotehardie with tight buttoned sleeves and tippets, slashed at the hem and laced to the hem. Worn with a lined cowl hood. Shown parti-color for suggestion. View II - Puffed-chest thigh length cotehardie with high standing collar and medium angle-wing sleevess; buttoned to the hem. View III - Tight ankle - length cotehardie with full sleeves tapering to the wrist; buttoned to the crotch. Worn with a hood with liripipe. View IV - Tight knee length cotehardie with dagged hem, tippet oversleeves, buttoned undersleeves. Worn with a dagged hood with liripipe. View V - Puffed-chest thigh length cotehardie with small standing collar and full sleeves tapering to the wrist. Shown decorated heraldically for suggestion. The shirts and hose worn with cotehardies are not included in this pattern, but are available in other Period Patterns.
